CityLab: "Convincing Portland to Swim in the Willamette River"

writer

swimming as activism

This feature ran in The Atlantic's CityLab series on modern "change makers" in cities around the world. I profiled an activist in Portland who seeks to redefine the recreational relationship residents have with the city’s most prominent natural resource, the Willamette River, which was once so polluted due to industrial waste that it was unsafe for swimming. He dubs himself the leader of a "riverlution."
