a night in the life
Mel Brown is the Motown legend most people have never heard of. He toured with Diana Ross, performed at the White House with The Temptations, hung out with The Beatles and played on George Harrison's defining single "My Sweet Lord." Even so, he never earned much fame for himself.
I wrote and produced this documentary short (Brian Kimmel directed and edited the video), which tells the story of one Motown Record's most prolific sidemen — the mostly forgotten musicians who were never credited in the album notes of their recordings. Mel Brown's legacy remains little-known outside of his hometown of Portland, where he remains the guardian of the city's jazz scene.
