An archipelago republic of more than 7,500 islands, the Philippines remains one of the world's most linguistically diverse regions, with a heritage of Malayo-Polynesian languages and the lingering colonial influence of Spanish and American occupation. This culture feature for VICE profiles one Filipino-American celebrity who fortuitously helped push “Swardspeak” (aka Bekinese and Bekimon) into the country’s mainstream through his unexpectedly viral YouTube videos — not unlike how Polari, which was once widely spoken in Britain by queer men and other societal outcasts, has been absorbed into English.
