Sex segregation in sports

Athlete and filmmaker Lauren Lubin launched New York City’s only gender-neutral running group and became the first-ever openly non-binary athlete to compete in the New York City Marathon. Lubin, who uses “they” pronouns, competed as a protest to the larger world of sports, where non-binary athletes are widely denied access to major events and discriminated against in ways both subtle and overt. This VICE feature revisited an age-old debate about sex segregation in sports, profiling a new generation of gender-neutral athletes fighting for a more equitable future in professional, amateur and youth leagues.
